Bocce is a sport where precision is the key factor in a game. Similar to the game of bowls which originated in the ancient Roman times, Bocce developed into the sport it is known as today in Italy along with the influence of other European countries.
Identifying The Key Aspects Of Bocce
Bocce ball courts are typically constructed on soil or asphalt. These Bocce courts are 20-27 meters long (that’s 65.5-88 feet) and 2.5-4 meters in width (that’s 6.5-13 feet). Sometimes you will see wooden boards that surround the Bocce ball court which are 15 centimeters or about 6 inches in height.
Bocce balls are made out of various types of plastic or even bronze. These balls are totally spherical and don’t have any weight bias built in, unlike the lawn bowling balls. According to Bocce ball rules, there can be two players in a game or two teams of two or four players.
A Bocce match begins with a player or team throwing a smaller ball called a jack or pallino from one end of the Bocce court into an area that is about 5 meters (over 13 feet) in length and stopping about 2 meters (about 6 feet) from the farthest end. If the first team misses two times, then the other team has the chance to roll the ball (jack) anywhere they want within the 5 meter zone area. When both teams fail to launch the ball into the prescribed zone, game officiants place the Bocce ball in a particular spot on the court and then the game starts over with the first team rolling the ball.
According to Bocce rules, the teams have to get their Bocce ball closest to the Bocce ball that is already on the court. The side that does not have a ball near the ball already there bowls until they get in close proximity or they bowl all four balls. The team that has the closest ball gets awarded a point with the point limit being 13 in most cases.
Of course, there are varying techniques to launch the Bocce ball with the most common technique being the underarm roll or throw. It is acceptable to knock another opposing ball out of the way in order to get your own ball close to the favored position. It takes skill and interpreting the nuances of the court in order to do this.
Of course, backyard Bocce ball rules can be quite different just as beach Bocce is as well. However, the premise is going to be the same. You can find Bocce ball sets at a number of sporting good stores. Of course, your Bocce set may not include the bronze balls but rather the plastic version as it is cheaper and easier to carry around. If you do not have the money for your own Bocce court construction, any old backyard or beach or piece of ground will do. Heck you can even join a Bocce league if there is one in your area.
