Dart Techniques

Darts is more than a bar game; it’s a game of precision, space and good dart throwing techniques. Once you get your dart techniques down, it is all a matter of a little warm-up practice on the dart board of the day. Here are a few helpful hints to nail down the proper dart throwing technique:

1. The first thing you want to do is aim and make sure that you dart is actually facing where it is supposed to go! Based on your grip of the dart, you want to ensure that the pointy end of your dart is upward upon the release of your throw.

2. The second part of your dart throwing technique should be to hold your dart with firm yet light touch. Don’t grip the dart too much or strain your muscles trying to maintain control. This practice will actually cause you to screw up even more and your dart shot will not hit a favorable area of the dart board. In addition, too tight of a grip will hinder the release of the dart from your hand. With a firm, yet light touch, you will have a lot more control over the dart and its target path.

3. Use more than two fingers when holding and throwing the dart. Two fingers does not allow for much control over the dart nor will it help you throw it with enough velocity for it to even reach the dart board. Three or four fingers is optimal for your dart techniques as it will give you more control over the release of the dart as well as its speed. Use your best judgment on the number of fingers you should have on the dart. If it feels comfortable, with just three fingers, then do that. Others will use four or even all five fingers in their grip of the dart.

4. Part of your dart techniques includes the size and shape of the projectile. Every person has a different comfort level. Therefore, you may be able to easily grasp a dart with a longer barrel while others might prefer using fewer fingers with the short barrel darts. It’s up to you; whatever feels good, you should do.

5. Everyone has a dominant side and it does not always match their dominate hand. Therefore, choose the best side for you in your dart techniques when you manipulate your stance. You have to stand behind a marker a certain number of feet away from the dart board. Having one foot forward is in effect balancing your stance when standing in one position. Standing correctly is important as it can affect the throw itself.

5. Distributing your weight before you throw is essential. Otherwise if you lose your balance, who knows where your dart might end up? Do not lean over in an awkward manner. Some people balance their weight on the foot they step off on and that is ok. However you will want to avoid leaning too much during their dart techniques to avoid falling over.

It takes some time to become accustomed to a certain type of dart. The gripping of the dart as well as your stance and balance all play a part in developing your own style of dart techniques.
