There are a variety of versions for the game of darts. However, the most common version that most people think of is the game where you throw a little projectile with a pointy tip called a dart at a round board that is segmented into various sections. There are a number of versions as to how the game of darts got started but the consensus was that it originated over one hundred years ago or more.
Brief History Of Darts
The party line says that darts originated after some bored soldiers threw arrows at the bottom of a wine barrel. As this barrel dried, it created segmented cracks in it that are reminiscent of the colored segments we know of today on current dartboards. The game grew in popularity and soon found its way into pubs and bars.
The numbering and scoring on the dartboard was created to punish players for their imprecise throws. The game of darts has gone through various changes in terms of scoring. However, one fact remains the same no matter what the era – the bulls eye rules.
How To Play Darts
Typically, you have two players with about three darts each. The game starts with either a score of 301 or 501 for each player. The player who can reduce his score to zero first is the winner. Each segment on the dartboard is a different value, so those are subtracted from the score.
The final remaining dart if the game to earn the zero score has to hit the inner portion of the bulls eye or a double which is the outer portion of the bulls eye. In addition, the score must exactly be zero. If the points earned bring the score to below zero, it doesn’t count and the player’s score is reset to his previous total. The player does not win until the points are reduced to exactly zero.
Types Of Darts
In addition to the variations of the game of darts, there are also different kinds of dart projectiles as well. Of course, there are the steel tip darts that you hurl at a traditional cork-based dart board. Hammerhead darts and Alan Glazier darts are two popular brands of the steel kind.
There are also dart boards that are electric and use soft tip darts. This version is perfect for kids as there would be no worries about injuries. Black Widow darts not only has the steel version but also this more kid-friendly version of darts as well.
