First Person Shooter

First person shooter or FPS is a category of games for the computer and gaming consoles that give an onscreen view of you as the main character and all the action as seen through your eyes. Most games that are classified as first person shooter games use various types of guns and rifles are the weapon of choice, thus the name first person shooter.

Computer games were rather two dimensional until the introduction of 3D graphics. Perhaps some of the best first person shooter games that were first introduced are the revolutionary Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. They set the stage for bigger and better games but these two original first person shooter games still have a cult following even after ten years later.

In a first person shooter game, it is played as if you were the character and the action was told in the first person. During FPS games, as a first person character you have better aim and can refine your gun movements for more accuracy, unlike in a third person game. In addition, the realism of these FPS games has been widely touted as a success in spite of the controversy that they are often too realistic with the blood and gore.

These days, you will find that first person shooter games have been created for other gaming platforms such as Playstation, Game Cube, Xbox and even the Nintendo Wii. Among the Xbox first person shooter game reviews, the first Halo for the Xbox was widely touted and set the standard for control schemes. Other first person shooting games for Xbox were Halo 2 and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon which was the top game in 2006.

There are now quite a few free first person shooter games on the internet that you can download. For free FPS games however, you are required to download a client platform in which to play. However, for the most part, these online FPS first person shooter games are safe to download and play.

You can even download computer game demos for first person shooter games. These are typically abbreviated versions released to tease the gaming audience so that they might pay for the game when the full version comes out. All in all, free online FPS games are rather plentiful and you just have to run a quick internet search to find them. Just be sure that if your kids want to play that you preview the game first!
