Laser tag is a fairly recent phenomenon as it has only been around for about 20-25 years. This sport can be played as an individual or as part of a team. Players accumulate points by locking onto targets using “laser guns” which emit an infrared signal. The targets worn by every player have a transmitting element which signals when a player has been “shot” by a laser gun.
There are laser tag locations all over the country and both indoor and outdoor ranges exist. Outdoor laser tag has slightly different equipment than the indoor version and there is more chance of wear and tear than with indoor laser tag equitment. There are laser tag places which enact combat simulations as well as hold competition events and even engage in role-playing.
Laser tag equipment does not really use lasers. The transmitting component is much like the light emitting infrared diodes that are similar to those in remote controls. The laser tag guns shoots an infrared beam to the target which records that signal, indicating a hit. Players all wear these targets so that the laser guns can recognize them. Some laser tag guns also will shine a light beam on the target so the shooter can see them.
Most laser tag places around the country like Space City Laser Tag in Houston or Stratum Laser Tag in Arizona buy commercial laser tag systems as they are sturdier and last longer than the home grown versions. You can buy laser tag equipment for personal use, but don’t expect them to perfect as well as those at real laser tag facilities. When you personally buy laser tag guns, the mechanism that shoots out the infrared light typically goes out first; however the targets have also been known to malfunction.
It doesn’t matter when you have laser tag in Georgia or Washington State; both commercial and household models of laser gun system most likely have to be shipped off for repairs. It is important to note that because the indoor game versions tend to be less physically demanding, they are less likely to break down, unlike the outdoor play models. Being outdoors subconsciously spurs many players to run and roughhouse, which can cause players to fall. And when players fall, equipment typically breaks.
All in all, laser tag is a relatively contact free sport and people of all ages enjoy it. While some do not advocate kids holding guns, even if they are laser, for the most part, it is a harmless sport which brings a lot of fun to both young and old alike.
