When most people think of target sports, they picture a friendly game of darts at the local pub, shooting a bow in archery or using various firearms to shoot at various targets. Well, there are other target sports which are not as conventional. To consider what other target sports there are, a broad definition of a target sport should established.
Defining A Target Sport
A target sport could be loosely defined as a sport in which you launch a projectile at a target with the main objective being to hit said target. With an interpretation like that, you could expand those shooting and archery target sports into a whole new realm.
Those Other Target Sports
Perhaps one of the most popular sports in which you launch a projectile at a target in the hopes of hitting it is bowling. Your bowling ball that you bowl down the lane is the projectile and the pins at the end are the targets. The object of course is to knock them all down in one or two tries for the maximum amount of points. Bowling has its own set of rules but the bottom line is knocking those pin targets down.
Horseshoes is another pastime that is lumped into the other target sports category. Your projectile is the horseshoe and the target is the stake about 40 feet away. The object is to get a ringer with the horseshoe “ringing” around the stake or at least getting as close as possible.
Billiard sports are also seen as other target sports. The projectile is the white billiard ball (usually) and the object is to use a pool stick to hit the ball into another set of balls and get them in the pool table pockets. Now, there are a few versions of billiard sports and each has its own set of rules. They are billiards, pool, snooker and various spawns of the game in between.
Golf is also known a type of target sport. In this instance, you use a golf club to launch a projectile, meaning the small golf ball, towards a particular hole in the ground. The fewer strokes you need to hit the ball in the hole, the better. There are other versions of the game like miniature golf and speed golf.
Bocce, croquet, curling and knife throwing are also considered other target sports. After all, you are launching that projectile again to a specific target area. So as you can see, there are more of those “other target sports” out there than you might think. Heck, there are probably countless games that kids have made up over the years that all have the same objective – getting your projectile towards a certain target.
