When it comes to perfecting and practicing your shooting techniques, there is no better place than a shooting range. Shooting ranges are special facilities which are geared toward the practicing of firearms. There are indoor shooting ranges as well as outdoor shooting ranges. Depending on the gun or rifle you have as well as the shooting sport you are in will determine what type of shooting range you will need.
Indoor Shooting Range
An indoor shooting range will have a back wall that is sloped and made of an embankment of dirt. It will have reinforced partitions, known as baffles that are placed along the side walls and the roof. These baffles help with deflecting the ricochet of bullets which miss their targets. Typically stationary targets are used.
Indoor shooting range plans also include a good ventilation system which will wick away the smoke and any lead particles away from where everyone is shooting. This smoke is exhausted out of the building to prevent shooters from breathing these by-products in their lungs.
If you plan to build a shooting range indoors, you might consider adding a passageway which is air-locked for sound proofing purposes. This will greatly help with the sound pollution coming from the actual firing range. One of the other ways that sound pollution is reduced is by barring fully automatic firearms or larger caliber guns from being used inside the facility.
Living in the Arizona area, you might consider visiting the Ben Avery shooting range. They offer excellent instruction as well as great facilities in which to practice. They even have a pro shop filled with great shooting supplies. Bexar Community Shooting Range near Seguin, Texas or the Insight Shooting Range or Bullseye Shooting Range in California are other places to visit if you are in that area.
Outdoor Shooting Range
In shooting range construction outdoors, you will find that the back of the range is reinforced with sandbag barriers or traps shaped like funnels to prevent ricochet bullets from hurting bystanders or the shooters. You can find moving targets as well as stationary targets.
In building a shooting range outdoors, you might have to build two separate areas to segregate the high powered firearms and high caliber guns from the regular pistols and rifles. In addition, because some targets are moving ones like in skeet or clay pigeon shooting, you will definitely need a separate area.
You will notice at shooting ranges that the lighting can be adjusted. Sometimes you have to be prepared for various types of dark and light so you should practice in various levels of illumination.
If you want to know how to find a shooting range, look to your local gun clubs and organizations for help. In addition, it could be as easy as looking in your local phone book for help.
